The Importance of Irony in Film
Theater of illusion film denies its audience any dimension in which they might roam freely in imagination contained by the film's framework. It trains those exposed to it to identify film directly with reality. The films he's talking about are the ones that have recognizable everyday characters that you can relate to. And I think what he's trying to say is that they're not fantastical.
