I think that the position of Peter and just the reality of his successors has made the Catholic Church pretty limber in its ability to deal with developments throughout history, especially into modernity. In the absence of a pope, you will often find at least several popes, but sometimes many popes. People have all of these people vying to be that one voice who's going to represent the Church of Jesus Christ. I think that we see that happening in many parts of the Christian world today.
