The History of Coffee
Coffee is a tropical crop in the sense that it cannot survive frost. It's not actually tolerant to very high temperatures. So it tends to be grown higher up on the mountainside where it's protected from frost, but also protected from high temperatures. In terms of labor, then obviously the system is always used in slave labor. You would not be able to get coffee in the 18th century that hadn't been grown using enslaved labor.
