When i was a kid growing up in hawaii, my parents had a lot gay and lesbian friends. For the first time i can remember being introduced to the concept of gendered diversity in a more broad spectrum way at college over 20 years ago. In my current nuclear family, more of us identify as queer than as straight or sis. However, if i'd lived in a different era, and i didn't have access to the work done and continuing to be done by queer activists, i probably would not have questioned my sexuality or questioned my gender.
