The Paradox of Courage
Is the idea of a woman being a hero in these times conceivable? It is conceivable, but it is literally paradoxical for a Greek. In other words, by definition, there is something gendered about being courageous. A woman, because of her gender, unfortunately, can never fight and therefore can never demonstrate that kind of courage. But on the other hand, the sort of courage that's required to put up with the loss of a child, or in some other way, make a civic contribution through religion,. That sort of courage is possible, but not valued in the same way.
