Ziconatide is a non-opioid drug that blocks pain signaling in the spinal cord. Unlike opioids, this drug does not cause respiratory depression or withdrawal. Pharmaceutical companies don't want to touch something where you don't have good intellectual property. There's a lot of synthetic chemistry underlies bringing these things into the clinic.
