The Dualism of Material Consequences
Alan Watts: Consciousness is a graded phenomena, not an all-or-nothing thing. He says it's possible or maybe likely that human beings acquired consciousness through natural selection. Watts: The ability to have first-person experiences gave us competitive advantages over other early proto-human beings who didn't have that capacity. Watson: Some of the higher aspects of consciousness probably are byproducts of that large capacity brain which was developed as a survival mechanism.
