McCain Versus Obama - It's a Subtraction Election
The prototype campaign if I were to replicate it in spirit was the 2008 campaign because what you had there was minus maybe Palin is like you had Obama running on the not white America not black America not red blue etc. McCain who famously would like dismiss audience members who would say racist things about Obama didn't go there on the Reverend Wright hit and all that now both campaigns have their data they're like we got to turn out this person or that person but their rhetoric wasn't explicitly divisive so it was more in addition election than a subtraction election.
