The native population, which once numbered some 500 thousand, was wiped out by forcible expatriation to the island of hispaniola. The men died down in the mines from overwork and starvation. Both women and men were given only wild grasses to eat and other unnutritious food stuffs. And with the women and the men separated and never seeing each other, no new children were born.
