Introduction

Thousands of unskilled conscripts came in and out of the workers town every year. The men baked in the sun, sweating as they hauled stone under the watchful eyes of their overseeing army of officials. They might grumble and complain, but here they would have a humble place to sleep in one of the communal barracks no worse than their reed huts at home. If they suffered an injury, a doctor would set the broken bone or even perform brain surgery. And if they did their jobs, the gods would provide for all of them.
