In the years 1100 and 1200, as late as 1300, the language at court in England was not English, but French. And you really want to complicate it? Eleanor of Aquitaine is married to Henry II, but she used to be married to the king of France. So England and France from 1066 to 1453 are in this very, very close relationship. Then you have Germany and the Holy Roman Empire. And then Spain. Remember Spain is dominated by Islam. The Christians are pushing the Muslims down from 732, about 1085. It's a halfway monarch with Toledo, which is about center in the box of modern day Spain and Portugal. They may not like each other
