In the back of Lord of the Rings, there is an Elvish pronunciation guide. It mentions that in Cinderin, long and shorty are the same. In Quenya, longy is pronounced more or less like say. And it is sometimes represented by an EI. If I saw the diphthong EI, I would pronounce it A. Just like you take A-E and pronounce it I.
