The past is not equal to future. You can live without it if you run the right processes. People are not broken, they were perfectly people aren't broken. They're just behaving in ways that reflect their internal world,. Their particular map of beliefs and so on. That's a stupid way of looking at things. We always look in terms of giving people options because we operate on the principle that choice is always better than no choice.
