i grew up with an attitue toward religion that can best be described as a cautious curiosity. And then, befitting the tineter's typical distaste for nuance, that evolved into contemptuous curiosity. But what i also think was true of that time and those cultures, is that that intellectual life ah a cultivated and literature and poetry, reading and writing were not taken for granted. There was a sense in which intellectual life was a form of spiritual survival.
