conservatives argue that before the great society, say, before the new deal in the thirties and the great society in the sixties, there was much more charity. In most modern societies, there is a feeling that relying solely on private charity just results in too much unevenness and inequity. Pooling resources for things like health care or pensions is just as, actually more efficient than rel ing on lots of individual investments.
