A strong middle class is the product of a free economy. When people are free to do what they want with their money, they make stores,. They make restaurants, they make shops and tourism is the world's largest business if I'm not mistaken. It's the lockdowns that killed things, not COVID. Sweden didn't lock down and it did relatively, truly well. Not one kid fell behind in academia because schools were open for kids up to the age of 16.
