Endometriosis is a multi symptomatic, systemic disease that can affect all the organs in the body. Historically has always been associated with menstration, with heavy menstrual bleeding, with fertility. When it was studied in the 19 forties by an american physician called joseph meags, he assumed that it was becoming more diagnosed because women at that time were putting off having children until later in life.
A deeply embedded idea in our culture is the sexist notion that men are the “default” human, and women the unknowable “other". Nowhere is this more visible than in the history of medicine, with disastrous consequences for women’s’ health.
