Blake's always been very big in America. There's a line from Whitman to Ginsburg, in Ginsburg, and that's all Blake there. We can't call them illustrations precisely because they're not subordinate. Even though these two media are inextricable, one of the ironies of Blake's mode of production is that he can't produce enough books to reach a wide enough audience.
