What Is the Purpose of a Liberal Arts Education?
Wisdom is a habit of knowing first principles, which enables us to judge rightly about all other things in light of those first principles. So classical education is traditionally sopiential, or it has for its goal the acquisition of wisdom. A truly educated person is not simply an expert in a single field but one who can make good judgments about all reality and about human life. According to saint john henry newman, the proper function of universities is to educate students in this universal knowledge.
