There were gains made, particularly for women and girls, but that is not why the United States went in. The last 20 years have been years of huge progress for Afghanistan; that has all been brought to an absolutely shuddering stop. Yes, there were the usual kind of things you get with military involvement -- wedding parties blown to bits.
