Cabot's Royal Charter
Before Cabot could do anything, he needed a royal charter. The Treaty of Tortoises essentially divided up the non-European world for Spain and Portugal. Technically, any voyage west could be stepping on the toes of Spain or Portugal. Almost everything we know about Columbus is from a letter written several years later by a Bristol merchant named John Day to Christopher Columbus.
