Henry James was deemed unfit for military service because of a back injury he had sustained when fighting a fire. He went to law school at Harvard but soon realized that he was more interested in literature than law. In 1869 he left for Europe on his own and he kind of came into his own as an adult. His first novel Watch and Ward it was called I don't know anyone who's ever read that. For the next 10 years James was prolific coming out with several novels, novella Daisy Miller made him famous on both sides of the Atlantic.
