Tolstoy's character Gerasim accepts that he is going to die. He then becomes a kind of ideal figure for the peasant life, says Pissarides. In Tolstoy we would not probe too deeply into Gerasim because it's just not in his world. But what Gerasim is saying is I have to die too. So, you know, I get it and I'm going to help you. That we can do.
