Do Antidepressant Medications Work?
A systematic review with meta-analysis looked at over 100,000 patients examining 21 different antidepressant medications. They found a 1.3 to 2.1 times improvement over placebo. This also begs the follow-up question: Well, if these drugs modify serotonin and we know there's no correlation between serotonin and depression, then how are they working? The mechanism that we thought was being impacted may not be the primary mechanism or, very important, correlation and intervention data are two separate things.
