The Mechanism of Forgiveness
We only as a species ever found one way to deal with the horrific difficulty of the question of acting in the world and that was the mechanism of forgiveness. Hannah Aaron makes a crucial point. Without something like the mechanism of forgiven, action just continues forever, endlessly, irretrievably, appallingly. Nobody but nobody seems to be thinking about forgiveness. What does it mean? How does that girl who wore the Chinese inspired prom dress get atonement or forgiveness from it? Do all of the people in China have to simultaneously say we are not offended anymore, we forgive you?, he asks.
