How I Become a Scientist
Both of my parents are artists and a big part of why I think I'm a scientist today. In high school, when I was transitioning to college, I really didn't know what I wanted to do. So because I went to Willamette, which is a small liberal arts school, there were actually quite a few undergraduate research opportunities. And so I approached Gary Talman about research in his lab. He liked the idea of working with plants because he didn't want to have to kill animals. But most scientists are scientists out of this love because it's a demanding lifestyle.
