This is episode five of our six-part series Reconstruction from American History Tellers. In November, 1875, Grant confessed to Congressman Lynch that he effectively gave up Mississippi for Ohio. On Election Day 1876, Democrats in Louisiana and South Carolina violently suppressed the Black vote. The race becomes one of the most bitterly contested elections in American history. And many Black Americans feared that no matter who won the presidency, Reconstruction was doomed.
