Neanderthal Populations - Are They in Decline?
Neanderthals' lineage first starts to emerge about 400,000 years ago. They were in Europe for a long time and they went through a lot of harsh, climactic downturns and then re-expanded again. So I would say there isn't a reason to think that this type of population sizes were assigned of their imminent demise.
