Debussy String Quartet
Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast
Debussy's Meditations
Debussy's most famous piece is the 'Motto' movement. The viola plays a variation on the motto theme which is just indescribably beautiful. Debussy then brings the violins, now unmuted, back in to interrupt this meditation using the motto theme. But it was all just a mirage. Instead of interrupting, the motto theme is subsumed into yet another ostinato repeated a competimental rhythm. It sets the stage for the most passionate and in my opinion most moving moment of the piece.
