The History of the American Flag
The US bought 828,000 square miles of land from France for $15 million. The second purchase was the Gadskin Purchase from Mexico in 1854. States were not created right after land was acquired; it took time to set up governments and get things running. Every state essentially can decide whether or not they want their students to say the Pledge of Allegiance in classrooms. No student can ever be forced to do it.
