Sentient AI: A Catch All for Cognitive Complexity?

I think sometimes people use sentient as a kind of catch all for cognitive sophistication or self awareness. I'm very much not using sentience in that way. It might be related to intelligence in various ways, but it is very much not identical to those things, at least conceptually. So yeah, I think a very simple creature can probably feel pain, even if you can't reflect on that pain and so on.
