In 1978, over 900 congregants were coerced into what has been called the largest murder suicide in American history. The temple led anti-aviction marches and championed Angela Davis' campaign for freedom. When my mom was a teenager, People's Temple fit right into this orbit of black political and religious life in the Fillmore.
