The Baku is described as a benevolent semi-supernatural monster with an appearance that is basically that of a giant taper. The idea is that humans may call on it in the early morning hours to devour a bad dream or nightmare that has plagued their dream space allowing them to forget and carry on their day in peace which is a most worthy duty.
