Plato's Dialogues, the Death of Socrates
The death of socrates is, in a way, for plato, the most important fact about him. In his his on death, heis not only sentenced to death, he makes a choice write he he chooses death rather than capitulating to the demands of the polus. So yes, according to plato, this was a deliberate death. Socrates chose to die. We see that in other ways too later, he has opportunities to escape,. ecause the athenians don't really want to kill him. They'd be happy to see him just go off in exile.
