"I think empire is not a bad word for them as long as we acknowledge the shortcomings of it," she says. "He's trying to expand our understanding of what an empire can be, right? And that's one of the really cool interventions that he made in that Comanche Empire book." She adds: "If we take him seriously, we think about the five and six nations, the Iroquois Confederacy ... suddenly it's like whoa, we have a political entity that exerts dominance there?"
