Britain had recently taken over uganda as a protectorate, meaning they ran it. The wealth generated by the railway came at horrible price for the laborers. Two and a half thousand of them died building the track which was so dangerous it became known as the lunatic line. Around 30 laborers were killed in even more grisly circumstances. One night two lions known as the savo man eaters tormented the workers for months.
