Bonnie Jane Colwell met Joseph DeAngelo in 1969 while studying at Sierra College. She was a reserved straight-A student while he was out going and rebellious. He pushed Bonnie out of her comfort zone, taking her scuba diving on illegal spear-fishing trips and hunting without a licence on private property. In May 1970, DeAngelo proposed to Bonnie and she accepted. The couple separated in the early 1990s, but maintained an amicable relationship.
