Prostitution in France in the 1850s

William Acton was a serious student of prostitution who campaigned for its regulation in London. Prostutes were controlled by being registered at the police headquarters. These enrolled girls or subjected girls were forced to have medical examinations in order to get birth control. If inspectors found that the women had venereal diseases, they were treated. The vice squad also tracked down unregistered prostitutes and arrested them.
