The Times owned this font and they had exclusive rights to it. But only for a year, which is interesting. Is this like, why was there such a clock put on it as opposed to what would normally be a longer period for copywriting or trademarking of something? Yeah. It's tough to know for sure. We can speculate on a couple of things. One, it may have been part of the agreement, the Times pitched. Two, he might have known he had lightning in a bottle. And the price that they would have to pay for exclusivity may have been pretty prohibitive.
