Bernard McFadden's Physical Culture
In the early 1900s, a man named Pierre McFadden was arrested for selling young women to white slavers. He tried to portray himself as an eastern mystic who had access to magical powers when he was in trouble. The story galvanized much of New York high society against the very concept of Eastern mysticism. A diligent reporter turned up copy of Bernard's sadhana and published excerpts under the headline tantrics via sadhana. They picked everything they wanted from a combination of Hindu writings that were long metaphorically on oom-patter.
