What Happened to Beck's Eyes?
The author had surgery that made it so that when he was at high altitude, his eyes basically failed. The surgeon makes cuts in the cornia, which changes the shape of the cornia slightly. And a correct revision, the operation works, but it causes scars on the cornia. Because of the scar tissue, beck was getting very distorted vision, to the point where he couldn't see. So he turned around part way up the mountain and went back down. But because of his distorted vision, and because of the white out, he got completely lost up there.
