Is the K12 Education System Geared Against Boys?
The pre-university educational system is geared against boys both in terms of getting into college and then being successful once they're there. Most of the gaps that we see in terms of college enrollment and completion can be predicted by what's happened in K12. The teaching profession has become steadily more female and so only 24% of K12 teachers now are men. Only one in 10 elementary schools have no males. And it's pretty good evidence that having a male teacher helps, especially in subjects where boys are struggling like English,. which actually, interestingly, is a subject men are least likely to teach.
