The Intuition of Reciprocity

The Aishi Wie, or Zuni, elder and farmer Jim Inote tells the story of how his great grandparents awoke every morning before dawn to say a prayer to help the sunrise. Aspen has started making what seemed to be her first intentional attempts at language. The sounds she makes are mostly conversation with something other than us. I remind myself to give her ample space to listen to a wider, deeper, more complex world which emerges from my own trained tongue. It is within this wide silence that I can witness the way my daughter meets rain.
