I don't think particularly for very many use cases, at least today, those are needed. The true physical network constraints are like fiber optics. So whether it's like ETH with sharding and like they have 64 shards, a billion shards, it doesn't really matter because you're going to be constrained by how much data you can send across the Atlantic. Like that's your upper bound. And whether that can happen on a single shard or 64 shards in like Ethereum's case or four shards, it's all the same.
