What starts making you think that you can go from standing on stage and telling jokes to creating a t v show? Is it just because that's what everybody else does, or did you find yourself feeling the comedy wanted to do what wasn't going to be just held by the stand up stage?
Speaker 1
I'd learned some writing at us c. I dropped out after a year and a half because i just didn't have enough money to pay my tuition. And i, i got an apartment with adam sandler. And, you know, he was on m t v v jing at the time. He was on remote control, yes? So he had a little, a little more heat than us, but not much. But there was always a feeling oadam's going to hint. We all just believed in it, ecause we just thought he was funnier than everybody, right? Right? And,

and he, and then he alsois just like, if you need him, he just got tones of carisma and charm. And he's, he's like one of those people that you're like, oyo k, that's what a movie star is. And
Speaker 1
ols, in the early days, yes, he would turn on the charm yet. Right now, you have a muted atam, yes, becausea works hard and he has a family, and like me and like you, he's just tired. But imagine 23 year old adam? Yes? Adam had a lot of energy and ambition and enthusiasm. So when you hung out with him at a restaurant, he really tried to make you laugh. Yes, he was a great person to hang out with. He loved to crack you up onim. You know, i guess it's like we ne wen. He were like conan in the room at el or the simpsons. When you hang at us, you're just, your chee is exploding, yourit energy. And then every once along we would think, i guess we should write something for adam, like, something's going to happen. Can we prepare this? Like, there must be a move or a t v showandthn, when you say, bre who's we? Well, you know, i was friends ot his friend, jack garaputa, andon roduced his movies, and tim hurly who wrote a lot of b movie and went to college with him. And so, you know, therewerwere some really tolents and friends, and everyone had a sense of, there's going to be work soon, and we'd better get readyye to do it. And so adam got asanel, and everybody was trying to support him with any joke ideas or sketch ideas in the first year when he was just trying to get any acceptance. And then it turned into, oh, adam and tim wrote a movie, and then id you know, go up and do some rewrites on the movie with them. And and to i just got kind of pulled in to yointo that world of how do we, how do we support each other? You know, very collaborative and really fun. I mean, sitting around trying to think of happy gilmore punch up joke, right? Right? There's nothing better than that. And i met stiller around that time, and did the sketch show with stiller, but i didn't really know how to do anything. I just, i was just fake it till you make it. Who'se that idea where everybody was, whose

idea was to ben stiller show?
Speaker 1
Well, he had to show an m t b he did with jeff conn which was paddling the larry sander sho as the scenes of a sketch showden i don't remember tha host. And it was really, really funny. Did it you two parody, which was incredible. Link you two a, it was kind of a parroty of get back ant was like, you two playin the roof arela and and no one is around to watch. And, and he had a great, a richard greeco paroty called looker, which was really funny, like a conpaker. And so when that went down, ben had some interest at h b o. They won the sketch show, so we pitched this sketch show, and then they sold it to fox. And so suddenly this little sketch show for h b o was like a real show and a network, tal on network. And we had never worked at that scale before, and so we just had to figure it out. And so we hired who we thought was funny, was boboan kirk and jenny gravlo and andy dick and deno stan metopolisdino brillian wrote for the show, woth the skank sketches, and so many great aches. And jeff con and branforester and sultan pepper wrote for that showd anda, rob coan, it was a really amazing gro gen,

but
Speaker 1
we're just winging it. Ou nw, the only one who knew what they were doing was ben and bob. Ye, bob really was on his game. He had been it saturday night life for a few years, yes. And and that was really fun, but also miserable, because we so tired. Like i e, peple know how to produce things now, like they know how to shoot a skatch, and they have the good camera, and they have the editing system. We were still editing with like v h s ts back then. Y, like there wasn't no nonlinear digital system, basically before anyone was on the internet. Yes, i remember everything was hard. Yes.
