I Think He Was Intentionally Indirect in Many Ways.
He was trying to get a hearing, i think, among evangelical christians. His letters and in his own collection, often ended up there. In many respects, some of it's in the bodlian. So he was intentionally indirect in many ways. I think he would have shocked people if he had been more direct.
