The Importance of Emotional Forecasting
Carrie Morwedge: Are we accurate or inaccurate in the way that we predict different kinds of emotional consequences of events? She says a study by Daniel Gilbert and Timothy Wilson found sports fans had a hard time predicting how happy they'd be the day after their favorite team won a big game. People tended to overestimate the pangs of despair they would feel upon that kind of heartbreak relative to people's actual reports, she says.Morwedge: The research also suggests that we may underestimate how much joy we derive from very simple pleasures like an ice cream with our child.
