A quantum dot is a tiny piece of semi conductor, maybe one to ten nanimeters wide. And they can act like little designer atoms that can trap electrons and sit at whatever energy levels you want. There are a lot of different approaches to making these quantum dots, and we'll see which one sort of takes off for various applications.
