The Different Types of Mining Economy in Africa
Small scale mining is usually done by subsistence miners using hammers and picks and shovels. Industrial mining on the other hand is much larger scale, with massive machines and industrial diggers. And so that creates a different kind of political economy. There's many, many more people involved because it's artisanal, industrial mining doesn't require a lot of people. So profits are much more concentrated in a very narrow class of professional workers.
