I think probably 90 something percent of Bitcoin users were not going to be illegal all along, but there was this really important 1% or 10% of Bitcoin users who were doing illegal drug deals. So the stand out unique, differentiating user base happened to be illegal recreational molecules and debtors. The most active exploiters of the information link happened to be Western law enforcement. But this is really just an accident of history, right? If people use things like Bitcoin that pervasively leak information about their users to the whole world, it would be more useful or advantageous for advertisers, monopolies that want to maintain their position by exploiting information on a greater scope than their competitors.
